Dec. 16, 2017 — The Cy-Fair Bobcats are headed to Arlington, Texas to play for the UIL 6A Division II State Championship after defeating the Austin Westlake Chaparrals, 14-6.
The Bobcats made history twice on Saturday at NRG Stadium. Cy-Fair played its first appearance in the State Semifinals since 1985 when the Bobcats were defeated by the Odessa Permian Panthers. Second, the Bobcats punched their ticket to their first ever state championship appearance in school history. Cy-Fair is only the third Cy-Fair ISD school to ever participate in a state championship game. The 2006 Cypress Falls Eagles and the 2014 Cypress Ranch Mustangs are the other two schools to play in the state title game.
Cy-Fair’s outstanding defense held the Westlake Chaparrals, who average 48 points per game, to only two mid-range field goals. Westlake’s Nakia Watson, who is committed to play collegiate football at Wisconsin, recorded only 51 rushing yards on the day. Quarterback Taylor Anderson threw for a season-low 101 yards and no touchdowns.
Trenton Kennedy ran for 81 yards on 23 carries and caught four passes for 22 yards. Erick Hallett and Ryan Nelub each caught one of Cam Arnold’s two touchdown passes on the day. Hallett’s touchdown late in the fourth quarter sealed the fate of the Chaparrals.
Cy-Fair linebacker and Air Force commit Patrick Atkinson slated 11 tackles and two sacks to the lead the Bobcat defense.
The Bobcats will play the Waco Midway Panthers on Saturday, December 23 at AT&T Stadium at 7:00 PM. Midway defeated the Longview Lobos to advance to their second state championship game appearance in their history.
