Cy-Fair Bobcats are Crowned State Champions

ARLINGTON — After nearly 80 years football competition, the Cy-Fair Bobcats are state champions!  The Bobcats defeated undefeated Waco Midway, 51-35.

Cy-Fair opened the scoring with a two yard Trenton Kennedy rushing touchdown.  The Bobcats would go on to score 44 of the next 51 points in the ball game.  Midway’s only score in the first half was on a 48-yard pass from Oklahoma commit Tanner Mordecai to Dart Smith.

When asked what winning a state championship meant to him, sophomore defensive back Payton Tally said he couldn’t thank everyone enough, “the corners, the defensive line, the coaching staff, the offensive line.”  Tally went on to talk about how “he grew up around Coach Pustejovsky and understood the shortcomings in the past.”  Tally finished the game with a team-leading 11.5 tackles and three pass breakups.

A few other players shined on the defensive side of the ball, including senior linebacker Jace Bobo who reigned in 8.5 tackles, including 2.5 TFLs and a pass breakup.  Senior Patrick Atkinson, who led the team in total tackles coming into the state game, concluded the game with 6.5 tackles, 2.0 TFLs, and two quarterback hurries.  Kyle Bell wrapped up the championship game with 6.5 tackles, 0.5 TFLs, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and two pass breakups.

The 2017 Cy-Fair Bobcats will go down in history as the first Cy-Fair ISD team to win a state championship and only the third to ever appear in the state title game.  The Bobcats join the 2014 Cypress Ranch Mustangs and the 2006 Cypress Falls Golden Eagles.
