Cy Creek Coaching History

John Baker

1979-1980

Cy Creek’s head coach for their first two varsity seasons, John Baker’s short time at the helm was key in successfully getting Cy Fair ISD’s third football program off the ground. Having two years to prepare for their varsity debut, the Cougars rookie campaign started off on a high note before a sophomore slump made them the undebatable bottom feeders between themselves, Jersey Village, and Cy Fair. Going winless in his second year, both sides of the ball seemed completely absent, as the Cougars were outscored on the year by nearly a three to one margin, 82-217. Baker would not return for another season and stepped down at the conclusion of the 1980 campaign.

Les Koenning

1981-2001

The Cougars’ rough second season was followed up with the hiring of Les Koenning as the team’s second head coach in school history, a move that would pay dividends over the next two decades. Under Koenning’s leadership, Cy Creek would come away with their first winning season just two years into his tenure, and their first playoff appearance and win a mere year later. As the 1980’s progressed, the Cougars consistently put numbers in the win column, capturing their first district title in 1986. Overall, his reign saw 11 winning seasons in his first 15 years at the helm, including district championships in 1986, 1990, 1993, and 1994. That would be the high point however, as the team drastically faltered near the end of the 20th century. Despite the late struggles, Koenning still holds the record for the most wins and highest winning percentage as a head coach in Cy Creek history.

Greg McCaig

2002-present

The turn of the century saw the first coaching change in 20 years for Cy Creek, as the school hired Greg McCaig to replace Les Koenning for the 2002 season. By 2005, the change of fortunes with McCaig at the helm gave the Cougars their first playoff appearance in 11 years. With the arrival of Chuckie Keeton on campus in 2007, McCaig’s team became an offensive juggernaut, putting up 400-plus points every season from 2008 through 2010 and capturing three straight district titles. The 2010 playoffs also became a highlight of their own, as Cy Creek advanced to the third round of the playoffs for the first time in school history. In the years since Keeton graduated however, McCaig and the Cougars have struggled, picking up only two winning seasons in five years and have made the postseason just once since their 2010 run.
