Cy Springs Coaching History

Robert Blackshear

1998-2007

What would end up being the first of two Cy Fair ISD programs he would open, Robert Blackshear launched the Cy Springs football team into a swirl of average performances during their first four seasons. Following a 1-9 dud in 2002, Blackshear and the Panthers followed it up with what has been the best football performance in the school’s history to date, as they captured the district title and won their first playoff game. Not much of the success would be built upon, as Cy Springs rattled off four straight losing seasons before Blackshear left to open Cy Lakes in 2008.

Roland Gonzalez

2008-2011

Hired to try and turn around a program suffering through four consecutive losing seasons, the brief tenure of Roland Gonzalez started off slow and finished with an implosion. Ending up on the negative end of the Hurricane Ike shortened 2008 campaign with a 4-5 mark, the Panthers finished 2009 with a lackluster 4-6 year. From there things went from bad to worst, as Cy Springs fell apart in 2010 with a 2-8 mark and then bottomed out the next year, posting their first winless season in a disastrous 2011 campaign. Gonzalez resigned at the end of the year to take a coaching position at Victoria East High School.

Rick Cobia

2012-present

In the midst of eight straight losing seasons, Cy Springs hired a familiar face back in Rick Cobia, who spent time as an assistant coach with Langham Creek and Cy Falls during the majority of the 1990’s. Essentially tasked with having to rebuild the Panthers football program from the ground up, Cobia led the team to a 1-9 record during his debut in 2012, their lone win coming against 0-10 Cy Lakes. And with a sudden a vengeance not seen in years, the Panthers came flying out of the gate in 2013, rocketing to a 3-0 start and a share of first place before dropping their next seven in a row to conclude the year. Largely seen as a success however, Cobia and Cy Springs attempted to pull their good fortunes into 2014. While their record remained the same 3-7, three of their seven losses were by two possessions or less. So while Cobia and the Panthers continue to look for that elusive winning record and playoff spot, success has slowly been mounting.
