After a career in education that’s spanned 42 years, the last 17 of which were at Cy Ridge, Rams head football coach Gary Thiebaud has announced his retirement, effective at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

Tied with Cy Fair head coach Ed Pustejovsky for the second longest active tenure of any varsity head football head coach in Cy Fair ISD, Thiebaud has been the only head coach in the program’s history. After serving as a coordinator at Langham Creek, he was hired to start up Cy Ridge athletics in 2002, two years before the school fielded it’s first varsity program.

Thiebaud and his staff wasted no time in making Cy Ridge a competitive football team, making the playoffs in their first year of varsity football in 2004, to date the only school in Cy Fair ISD history to accomplish that feat.

“I have been in CFISD for over 20 years, and Coach Thiebaud has been a steadfast constant in CFISD Athletics that entire time,” former Cy Falls head coach and currently Cy Fair ISD Associate Athletic Director Kirk Eaton told Varsity Wires. “When I first got here I was quick to realize that he was a true ‘coach’s coach.’ You were always going to face a well prepared team that would play until the clock read 0:00, whether it was his Langham Creek defenses or his Cy Ridge teams. He was a champion for kids and community, and always modeled what a coach should be doing. It was an honor to coach against him, and work alongside him. Coach Thiebaud is a credit to the coaching profession.”

The Rams went on to make the playoffs in six of their first seven seasons, including trips to the Regional Semifinals in 2007 and 2008.

Thiebaud’s best on-the-field run came in 2016, when he led Cy Ridge to their first Regional Finals appearance in school history.

“Gary Thiebaud has dedicated 25 years of his professional career serving the kids of CFISD,” Cy Fair ISD Athletic Director Ray Zepeda told Varsity Wires. “We are extremely thankful for his many years of dedicated service and for all that he has done for Cy Ridge and Langham Creek High School. He was the first athletic coordinator at Cy Ridge and worked very closely with founding principal Claudio Garcia and his team to establish many of the traditions that have become an integral part of the Cy Ridge community. His influence will have a lasting impact on Cy Ridge High School and CFISD. I know that principal Stephanie Meshell and the entire Cy Ridge community will miss Coach Thiebaud and his contribution to their learning community. We wish Coach Thiebaud and his wife Jan the best as they collectively begin a new phase in their lives.”

Thiebaud leaves Cy Ridge with 91 career victories as a head coach with the program, fifth all-time in Cy Fair ISD history.
